Eligibility for the Jenn Murphy Scholarship

Excelling in Extracurricular activities
We are looking to reward students that demonstrate passion, leadership, and commitment. As a general rule, anything you do routinely outside of the classroom, and not for academic credit, counts as an extracurricular. The activities should also be valuable to you, and have a significant impact on your development. In a similar vein, extracurriculars should also be something that you devote significant time to. So, basically any organized club, sport, or other activity can be classified as an extracurricular, as long as you’ve shown dedication, and the activity has helped you grow. If you have any questions on if your activity is considered an extracurricular activity or not, feel free to contact us! We know you are so much more than your GPA, so show us! We want to see how you shine!
Maintaining at least a "B" average
Although grades may not be representative of a student’s intelligence, they can be indicative of other important factors such as motivation and work ethic. We award on the basis of personal achievements as well as academic achievements. You must be committed to your education and your accomplishments must include your grades. The 'Jenn Murphy Scholarship' is meant to help defer the costs of higher education. Therefore, the scholarship application will ask you about where you plan to attend college. If you have any questions about what your grade point average is, you should contact the BUHS office or your guidance counselor, and request your transcripts. Please be prepared to include your Fall 2020 grades transcript as one of the attachments you submit.
Living in the spirit of Jenn
The scholarship will be presented annually, at the end of each school year, to Brattleboro Union High School seniors who not only have extraordinary accomplishments in their extracurricular and academic endeavors, they also share a commitment to ‘living in the spirit of Jenn.’ 'Living in the spirit of Jenn,' means showing a dedication to humanitarianism and to strengthening the town of Brattleboro's community and/or the communities abroad. 'Living in the spirit of Jenn,' means demonstrating outstanding perseverance and commitment to living outside oneself, with a determination towards bettering the world around you. 'Living in the spirit of Jenn,' means and exuding the civic-minded compassion which makes our little slice of world, Brattleboro, Vermont, so unique and unforgettable.
Demonstrated Need
Need based scholarships are given to students who show financial need. These awards determine eligibility based on family income. Following this simple equation is how we will determine your need: Cost of School - Expected Family Contribution = Need We determine your eligibility for need-based aid by taking your Cost of Attendance and subtracting your Expected Family Contribution andother financial resources. Financial need oftens comes from filling out the FAFSA, however, a paragraph describing the costs of your higher education institution you will be attending and your need-basis, will suffice. Scholarships are gifts. They don't need to be repaid. Many times students will have to rely on student loans to get through schooling. When you graduate college, the less debt the better.
